Some Christians believe that the Mother of Christ appeared in Portugal in 1917, toward the end of the First World War, to ask the world for prayers for peace.
According to the story, she did not appeal directly to government officials,
Instead, she warned residents of a small village that another war would soon break out and that "entire nations would be annihilated" if her instructions were not followed.
(This story is more fully told in a documentary narrated by Ricardo Montalban who is more famous for the role of Khan in "Star Trek II"). it is worth noting that Montalban, a famous actor who nonetheless is completely comfortable discussing the story, is Mexican and grew up in a culture where the great love of Christ's mother for people on earth is taken for granted.
In this course we look at two nations which the USA unfortunately helped turn into war zones during the "Cold War" which followed World War II: Hungary in the 1950s and El Salvador in the 1980s.
(We came into contact with Salvadoran refugees as a result of a series of events that took place here, in the United States. As a result of these same events, we also came into contact with Mexican trafficantes, known as narcos, though here the narcos are understood to be drug enforcement Agency police.
In both cases, radio broadcasts survive which capture live recordings of the terror: the invasion of Hungary, and the assassination of Archbishop Romero.
If you have the courage you can hear Romero's last sermon in the above link.
There is also an eyewitness account of a massacre which seems to be unacknowledged by official channels.
Sadly it is reported by many sources that the soldiers who committed atrocities were often trained at the "School of the Americas" paid for by the United States "to fight communism".
